Tombstone Tuesday: Richard and Sarah Lewis, Old Stone Church Cemetery, Pendleton, SC

One of our favorite historical sites in Upstate South Carolina is the Old Stone Church and cemetery in Pendleton, SC, located near Clemson University. The following two markers, those of Richard and Sarah Lewis, are located in the older section of this large cemetery.

Sacred
to the memory of
Richard Lewis
who died on the 23rd Oct 1831
in the 67th year of his age.
He was a native of Albemarle
county Va but removed in early
life to Rutherford N.C. where he
resided a number of years, and
for thirteen years preceding his
death was a resident in this
community. He held a respectable
station in life, and his character
was that of an honest
and upright man.

Sacred
to the memory of
Sarah Lewis,
consort of Rich. Lewis,
who died on the 8th. Oct. 1841,
in the 73rd year of her age.
She was the daughter of James
& Agnes Miller of Rutherford N.C. and
for the last twenty three years of her
life resided in this community. For
thirty years a zealous member of
the Methodist Church

Unfortunately, I cannot read the last part of Sarah’s stone. It appears to refer to her zeal as a Christian.

Normally, I make notes on the inscriptions of markers we photograph, but for some reason, I have not made any for this particular cemetery.

For those wanting to learn more about the Old Stone Church, a good history is online here.
