We will meet again

James Wesley Ledford was my mother’s great-grandfather. He was buried in Coweeta Baptist Church Cemetery, Macon Co., NC, near his wife, Martha (Carpenter) Ledford, and her parents.

  1. Hi there! I am a descendant of William Carpenter, through his daughter Caroline Carpenter. My grandma remembers meeting Caroline’s grand daughter, Lizzie.

We are hoping to find some questions we have about the family, especially about William’s mother, Marthy Rogers.

    Thank you!

    • I’ve been out of the research game for a while, but if you post your questions here, someone may stumble across them who can help you out.

      • Thank you for your response, Dawn! I’ll leave a note with how I’m related to William Carpenter + the questions hoping to answer.

        William Carpenter
        Caroline Carpenter (his daughter)
        Althea Marinda Long (his granddaughter)
Caroline Elizabeth Bradley Mann aka Lizzie (his great-granddaughter)
        Mary Ella Mann (his great-great-granddaughter)
        R. Moore (his 4th great-granddaughter, my grandma)

We’ve come across a copy of his will stating his mother is Marthy (Martha) Rogers. We haven’t found any concrete information on her beyond that, which is odd because everyone in the family generally has info.

My grandma remembers meeting Carolin Elizabeth Bradley, who was called Lizzie. We have a photo of her (plus a photo of Humphrey Posey Carpenter, one of William’s sons). Both appear to be of some degree Native. We also have a note from another researcher stating Lizzie was likely Cherokee. My grandma remembers that there was an obvious lack of information about Lizzie’s background compared to the rest of the family. Lizzie’s daughter, Mary Ella (wife of John Hamilton Moore), would tell my grandma lots of info about the Moore side of the family with zero mention of her own.

We are hoping someone might have more concrete information relating to the potential Cherokee link / more information on Marthy Rogers in general.

Ancestry websites typically list her place of birth as Tennessee in 1765.

Marthy died ~ 1837. I would assume she passed away in Macon on William’s farm. I did find a document from Savannah, Georiga with Martha Rogers listed as dying in a hospital there. Savannah seems unlikely to me.

Marthy Rogers is sometimes associated as Martha Ann Rogers, Martha Allen Rogers, or Martha “sister of Corn Tassel”.

Potential spouses include Phillip Carpenter, John Hellfire Jack Rogers, and Ignatius Chisholm.

Potential parents have been listed as Corn Tassel & Tsigilili Carpenter, John Rogers & Elizabeth Emory, and John Rogers & Jennie Due.

Just so curious because my grandma has 2 books on Moore family history and 1 book on the Mann family history. Both families settled in Macon / Clay / surrounding counties in NC and there are plenty of details about both overall. This specific part of the family has been such a game of telephone to learn more about.

Happy to email the details to anyone who may have more information. Thanks again!
