Georgia } We the undersigned as
Floyd County } Justices of the Inferior Court
of the County of Floyd have hired of
L. C. Johnson a Negro man named
Dave for the use of the Poor house
for a portion of the year 1861 this at
the rate of Ten Dollars per month
his time to commence on the first
of September and close on the first
of November 1861
Rome Aug 24th 1861

  1. I always found it quite interesting that the slaves were also hired out to families and businesses. They all did not remain on the Estate.

    • I found that while looking for records to use for a lecture on researching the poor. I used it as a reminder that we never know where we’re going to find the information we need to solve a problem.
