New Name, New Look, Same Genealogy

If you popped in to read a post and thought you might be at the wrong place, relax. I’ve just been redecorating.

I’ve been blogging with WordPress for about three years now, and thought it time for a change. Not only do we have a new look, but we also have a new blog title. Now, don’t get me wrong, I really liked the old one (Genealogical Research: A Hobby or an Obsession?), but since genealogy hasn’t been a hobby for me in a very long time, it behooved me to find a more appropriate title. I believe I’ve found it with Digging in the Roots.

All of this change was brought on by some deep soul searching about the purpose of this blog. After a while spent envying the blogs of other genealogy professionals, I finally realized that my blog was not geared toward those worthy individuals but toward the equally worthy folks whose families are rooted in the Southern Appalachians. Sure, I do occasionally rant write about professional issues, but the bulk of my posts are (often subtle) attempts to help the plain ol’ average genealogist who might be struggling with their research. I enjoy helping others, and I also enjoy solving research problems, especially using unusual records. There’s nothing like digging into a difficult problem to get the old gray matter going; hence, this blog’s new name.

I hope to continue offering the same fare: information about goings-on in the genealogical world; tips on using records; research strategies; and highlights of interesting records, particularly related to the families of Northeast Georgia, Western North Carolina, Upstate South Carolina, and Eastern Tennessee. Within the next few years, I hope to begin earnest research into my Virginia ancestors, but that’s a ways off from now.

In the meantime, please visit often, and if you have questions or comments, then fire away. I’m always glad to hear from fellow researchers.
